I have to say I was a little shocked to find out that The Letter Press of Cirencester had introduced email wedding invitations into their portfolio. The reason I love the invites from the Letter Press so much is that when you pick one up you instantly know that it has been crafted with the kind of skill and expertise that cannot be learned in a one week crash course on Photoshop. Try as you might you will never be able to feel the texture of board and the letterpress indentation in the Venetian design below however much you rub your fingers on the monitor.

That said however these email invitations do follow in the same style in many of the traditional print invitations in the Letter Press of Cirencester wedding stationery range and I can see a use for these as a complimentary addition to a couples selection of items. If you have a very big guest list then it is a lot more economical to send a traditional print day invite to family and close friends and a matching e-invite to rest of the guest list invited to the evening reception only perhaps. The electronic invite is essentially an image of the original print would look like and it does have the same elegant type and will have undergone the same typeset process as a traditional invite. This last point is quite important because the proofing process of your electronic invitation will have had the expert eye cast over it as to the proper punctuation and layout formalities of the Letter Press’s house style style from their 20 years + industry expertise

If time is not on your side then you are also cutting down the Letter Press’s 3 week delivery to around 3-5 days to cover the proofing of your electronic version. Also, if your friends are part of the Facebook generation then they are likely to get your invitation within hours let alone days. A read receipt ticked on your email client is another sure indicator that your invitation has been received. That is a lot of recorded delivery labels and expense if you want the same kind of service from Royal Mail.

It doesn’t matter what you do to an electronic invitation it will fortunately never replace the craftsmanship qualities of its real life equivalent (even if you give it a flashy self opening animation like the Venetian gif image below). And, whilst I can see that they do have a place I only hope they do not extend to other items in the wedding stationery range such as Orders of Service. A mother of the bride has enough problems trying to find what hat to wear to the church without having to find a matching laptop bag as well !
